Shaping our Everyday: Health and Well-being in Third Places

Christina N. Contreras, ULI/Martin Bucksbaum Senior Visiting Fellow and Principal & Founder of Living Ecology Studio, is using a well-being framework to explore how privately-owned and managed ‘third places’ improve human and community health and well-being outcomes. Third places are places outside of home and work (such as stores and restaurants) where people enjoy spending time with others. They are essential to creating healthy and vibrant communities. Christina will share inspiring examples of third places from around the country that are enhancing cultural and political equity, strengthening urban resilience, and building social cohesion. Tools and strategies for replicating these approaches will also be discussed. Additionally, Christina will share how a well-being framework, which centers equity and measures how people perceive the quality of their lives, can provide a method for the real estate industry to better understand and deliver on what matters most to individuals and communities.
